Gardening

I am so excited to try gardening this spring! This is my first house with a real yard and I want to grow everything. One to save money but also because it sounds like fun. It also seems to be a relaxing hobby. I rather be gardening than watching tv, which seems to be my hobby of choice right now. I am going to try peas, bush beans, lettuce, spinach, carrots and tomatoes. My fiance would also like me to try watermelons and pumpkins but we will see. I don't want to overwhelm myself at first. How did your first garden go? How much time did you invest to it? I am very excited but also scared because it is something new and I don't want to mess up. I will post my progress as something starts to happen! Have a great weekend!

  1. Hi there, I do a little gardening myself and end up canning as well. This saves us money as well. Let me know if I can give you some tips. I am by no means an expert but have made enough mistakes to learn from them. Take care

  2. I would love any tips as this is a brand new project for me. My fiance wants me to try all of these things and I have to remind him that I need to start off small and build it up as I gain more experience.

  3. I started with the easy ones. Tomatoes, cucumbers and zuchinni. I chose these because I wanted o can tomatoes relish and mustard pickles. I have not ventured into canning low acid foods yet. I would love to plant some berries to have my own for jam. I currently pick my own but it is the same price as buying jam in the store. My best piece of advice is to ensure your soil is adequate and to add compost as much as possible.

  4. Thanks for the advice! I actually bought some of my gardening supplies and seeds yesterday. I recieved a Target giftcard from the paralegals I work for and decided to use that towards my gardening stuff. We are going to try tomatoes (cherry and regular), lettuce, pumpkins, watermelons, peas, carrots and string beans. We'll see how it goes! For composting, can you buy compost from a store because I did not try composting this year? Thanks!
